Sanctuary for Families asserts that due to immigration from the twenty-eight African and Middle Eastern countries that practice FGM, even more U.S. based females—more than 200,000 girls—are at risk today.

Girls are sometimes sent away for “vacation” cutting to countries that practice FGM. Sometimes it is done in the U.S. In this shadowy world, untrained women often use razor blades or crude instruments, and they do not administer anesthetic.

The U.S. hasn’t passed laws to prevent this. In France, there have been at least 100 successful prosecutions and prison sentences for parents who allowed their daughters to be mutilated. In the U.S. there has only been one. In 2006, an Ethiopian immigrant was sentenced to ten years in prison after he removed his two-year-old daughter’s clitoris with a scissors.
